Chapter 26 - The Father Test
The DNA results arrived that afternoon.
Jonathan Morrow was Mia’s biological father.
A second comparison confirmed he was also Eva’s father.
The evidence answered one question and made every other question more dangerous.
Jonathan had disappeared from police supervision thirty minutes earlier. A false evacuation order had cleared the building, and an officer using valid federal credentials had escorted him outside.
The officer’s identity belonged to a man who had died eleven years ago.
Northbridge was still creating living people from dead records.
Jonathan called Mia from the dealership vault.
Behind him, the silver case stood open.
“I did not escape to run from you,” he said. “I escaped because Rachel has the Ownership Title.”
“You lied about visiting Eva.”
“I was not permitted to take either of you.”
“You paid the Mercers to control me.”
“I paid them because Evelyn refused to let me know where you lived.”
“You received reports every week.”
“I needed to know you were alive.”
Mia looked at the writing left inside the medical facility.
“Did you order my mother’s disappearance?”
“No.”
“Did you create the paternal reversion clause?”
Jonathan hesitated.
“Yes.”
Eva turned away from the phone.
Jonathan continued quickly.
“It was meant to stop Rachel from forcing the two of you to fight for ownership. If control became disputed, it returned to me.”
“You built a system where our disagreement made you powerful.”
“I believed I could protect both of you.”
“By owning the answer.”
Jonathan’s expression hardened.
“Rachel has Thomas. She may also have Evelyn. The transfer begins at midnight on your birthday. Unless all heirs are present, she can expose every protected identity inside the archive.”
Nora stepped closer.
“All heirs?”
Jonathan looked at her locket.
“Celia Ward’s heir must be there.”
“Who is Celia’s heir?”
The lights inside the abandoned facility suddenly failed.
Emergency power activated.
On the tablet, the delivery-room footage continued.
The curtain opened fully.
The third crib was empty.
A nurse carried an infant out of the room.
