Chapter 13 - The Hearing

The courtroom was filled before the judge arrived.

Reporters occupied the back row after the empty grave and identity fraud became public. Relatives who had ignored Mia’s calls for years appeared wearing solemn expressions, hoping to separate themselves from Kyle and Lorraine.

Brianna entered under guard.

Her clothing had been replaced with a plain detention uniform. Without the blue top, gold watch, and luxury SUV, she looked less powerful.

She looked at Mia.

“You think you won.”

Mia did not respond.

“You don’t even know what the game is.”

Nora stepped between them.

“Save it for your attorney.”

Brianna smiled.

“Your father taught Kyle everything.”

Nora’s face tightened, but she remained silent.

The hearing began.

Nora presented property records, forged signatures, dealership documents, trust statements, and the recording from the hidden room.

Dean’s confession was submitted under seal.

Kyle’s attorney appeared without Kyle and requested a delay.

The judge refused.

Then a new attorney entered the courtroom.

He carried a leather case and presented documents naming him as representative for Evelyn Mercer.

The room erupted.

Mia stood.

“Where is she?”

The attorney adjusted his glasses.

“My client is unable to appear.”

“Is she alive?”

“I am authorized to confirm that Evelyn Mercer survived the accident.”

Reporters began typing.

The judge ordered silence.

The attorney filed a statement declaring that Evelyn had willingly appointed Kyle administrator of the trust and had authorized several disputed transactions.

Nora objected.

“The statement was signed yesterday under unknown conditions.”

“It was digitally witnessed,” the attorney replied.

“By whom?”

“Thomas Hayes.”

Nora went still.

The attorney presented a video.

Evelyn appeared seated against a gray wall.

“My name is Evelyn Mercer,” she said. “I am alive, and I appointed Kyle Mercer to protect the family trust. Mia has misunderstood the financial arrangements. I request that all investigations stop.”

Mia watched her mother’s face.

The words sounded clear.

But Evelyn’s eyes moved repeatedly toward the lower right corner of the camera.

Someone was standing there.

The judge asked whether Mia recognized the woman.

“Yes.”

“Do you believe this statement is voluntary?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Mia remembered the audio recording.

Protect yourself.

Refuse them.

“Because my mother taught me to trust the numbers.”

Mia asked that the video be replayed.

Evelyn tapped one finger against the table while speaking.

The rhythm seemed random.

Nora listened carefully.

“It’s a code.”

Mia counted the taps.

Four.

Seventeen.

Eight.

Twenty-two.

Thirty-one.

The same sequence.

Evelyn was telling her to open the account.

Kyle’s attorney approached Mia with a document.

“This matter can end now. Sign the withdrawal, and Evelyn’s location will be provided privately.”

Mia looked at the signature line.

The courtroom waited.

Brianna leaned forward.

For twelve years, the Mercers had taught Mia that obedience was love.

They had taught her that questions were betrayal.

They had taught her that freedom required permission.

Mia picked up the pen.

Kyle’s attorney smiled.

She drew a line through the document.

Then she wrote three words across it.

THEN I’M OUT.

An alarm sounded from Nora’s laptop.

The encrypted account had activated.

Files began uploading automatically to law-enforcement servers, regulatory agencies, and several news organizations.

Hundreds of records appeared.

False medical shipments.

Money transfers.

Identity files.

Recorded conversations.

Photographs of officials accepting payments.

The courtroom doors closed under the judge’s order.

Kyle’s attorney attempted to leave.

Federal agents met him at the aisle.

Brianna began shouting.

“You have no idea who you just exposed!”

Mia looked at the upload counter.

Ninety-eight percent.

Ninety-nine.

Complete.

A final folder opened.

Its title was MIA’S FATHER.

Inside was a photograph of Evelyn standing beside Thomas Hayes and a third man.

The third man had Mia’s eyes.

Before Mia could open the attached document, every screen in the courtroom went black.

A message appeared.

PRIMARY RECORDS REMOVED.

Someone had accessed the account seconds before the upload completed.

Nora checked the server log.

“The files reached the authorities.”

“Then what was removed?” Mia asked.

May you like

Nora looked at the empty folder.

“Only the identity of your father.”
