Chapter 37 - The Door Beneath the Dealership

The photograph showed a woman Mia had never seen.
On the back was the first protected name.
Evelyn Mercer.
The woman stood beside Celia, Rachel, and Mia’s mother years before the twins were born.
Three daughters did not refer to infants.
It referred to the three women trained to inherit the original protected identity.
Celia Ward.
Rachel Hayes.
Evelyn Mercer.
The title had passed through them before reaching the next generation.
Nora opened the paper registry.
The delivery-room page contained records for Mia and Eva.
Both birth times had been altered.
One original time remained visible beneath the ink, but Evelyn tore the corner away before anyone could read it.
Eva stared at her.
“You destroyed the answer.”
“I destroyed the weapon.”
“You do not have the right to decide what I know.”
“No,” Evelyn said. “But I have the responsibility to stop them from making one of you more real than the other.”
The registry contained manual instructions for severing parental control.
The heirs did not need to delete the daughters’ records.
They needed to invalidate the founders’ signatures.
Jonathan Mercer Morrow.
Rachel Hayes, successor by false maternity.
If Mia, Eva, and Nora jointly rejected those claims, the commercial archive would separate from the protected archive.
Kyle entered through the upper vault.
He carried the glass title plate.
Jonathan followed with a federal officer’s weapon pointed toward the floor.
Reed ordered both men to stop.
Kyle raised the plate.
“If this breaks, the witness index releases.”
Jonathan looked at Mia.
“Complete my name, and I can stop him.”
“That gives you control.”
“For twenty-four hours.”
“Power does not become safe because it has an expiration date.”
Rachel stepped through the tunnel behind them.
She held the remote transmitter controlling the archive release.
Midnight was twelve minutes away.
Rachel looked at Nora.
“Choose me, and Celia’s name remains protected.”
Jonathan looked at the twins.
“Choose me, and neither sister has to disappear.”

Mia understood the final trap.
Both founders were offering protection from consequences they had created.
