Chapter 30 - The Mother Who Returned

The original Northbridge loading dock stood beneath a disused rail bridge.

Evelyn waited inside with Thomas.

Mia had imagined this moment for thirteen years.

In some versions, she ran forward.

In others, she demanded answers before allowing Evelyn to speak.

When she finally saw her mother, she did neither.

She stopped several feet away.

Evelyn looked older than the photographs, but she was real.

“Mia.”

“You left me.”

“I did.”

“You said you were protecting me.”

“I believed I was.”

“That sentence has ruined enough lives.”

Evelyn accepted the words without defending herself.

Eva entered behind Mia.

Evelyn stared at her second daughter.

“Eva.”

“Rachel told me you chose Mia.”

“I chose neither of you. Other people made the choice after I lost control.”

“You switched our bracelets.”

“Yes.”

“Which of us was born first?”

Evelyn looked from Eva to Mia.

“I will never answer that.”

Eva’s face tightened.

“Because you don’t know?”

“Because the question was created to turn you against each other.”

Thomas approached Nora slowly.

She did not move toward him.

“Did you know Celia was my mother?”

“Not until six years after Rachel disappeared with you.”

“You let me believe Rachel died.”

“I believed saying her name would bring her back.”

Rachel’s voice came from the entrance.

“And it did.”

She walked into the loading dock carrying a metal document case.

Her face appeared calm, almost maternal.

Nora stared at the woman who had raised her.

“You killed Celia.”

Rachel placed the case on the floor.

“Celia endangered thousands of protected people because she could not accept that the system required control.”

“You sold identities.”

“I sold certainty to powerful people. That money maintained every legitimate witness file Northbridge protected.”

Jonathan stepped from the opposite tunnel carrying the glass title plate.

Kyle followed several steps behind him.

Rachel looked at the three young women.

“Mia. Eva. Nora.”

The title plate illuminated.

“Three daughters,” Rachel said. “Three signatures.”

Nora’s voice was cold.

“I am not your daughter.”

Rachel smiled.

“Then why does the archive recognize you as mine?”
