Chapter 27 - The Signature Room

They returned to the dealership under federal protection.
Jonathan waited in a chamber behind the original vault.
The room contained three chairs facing the glass Ownership Title. A signing pad rested before each chair.
Mia, Eva, and Nora.
Three heirs.
Three signatures.
Jonathan stood behind the center chair.
“Rachel designed this room after Celia died.”
Nora looked at him.
“You still haven’t told me why I belong here.”
Jonathan pointed to her locket.
“Because Celia Ward was your biological mother.”
Nora’s face emptied of expression.
“No.”
“Rachel raised you after Celia discovered the identity sales. Thomas believed Rachel was your mother because she altered the hospital records.”
“Thomas is my father.”
“Yes.”
“And Celia?”
“Rachel’s younger sister.”
Nora backed away from the chair.
Jonathan activated the glass plate.
Three family lines appeared.
Morrow-Mercer.
Morrow-Mercer.
Ward-Hayes.
Below them was the paternal reversion clause.
Mia read it carefully.
The full signature did not merely say Jonathan Morrow.
It said Jonathan Morrow, temporary owner upon acknowledgment by either biological daughter.
“You need one of us to write your name,” Eva said.
“I need one of you to confirm that I am your father.”
“The DNA already confirms it.”
“Biology is not legal acknowledgment.”
Mia understood why Jonathan had come to her door instead of remaining hidden.
He had not come to meet his daughter.
He had come to be named by her.
Every screen in the room activated.
Rachel appeared.
“Nora,” she said softly. “You have grown into your father’s worst qualities.”
“Where is he?”
“Waiting for you to make the correct decision.”
A second feed showed Evelyn and Thomas seated together.
Both were alive.
Rachel placed a document before the camera.
“If the three heirs sign, the archive will remain sealed under my administration. If they refuse, the witness index will be released.”
“You’ll expose innocent people,” Mia said.
“I will prove that freedom always has a cost.”
The third signing pad lit by itself.
A mechanical voice spoke.
“Unknown fourth claimant detected.”
May you like
Jonathan turned toward the vault entrance.
Someone else had entered the building wearing Celia Ward’s silver bracelet.
