THEN I’M OUT / Chapter 38 / 40

Chapter 38 - The Choice at Midnight

Ten minutes remained.

Kyle held the glass title plate above the open vault.

Rachel controlled the witness release.

Jonathan stood between his daughters and the signing table.

Evelyn and Thomas remained beside the paper registry.

Reed’s officers could not move without risking the title or the transmitter.

Rachel spoke first.

“Nora, I raised you.”

“You changed my name.”

“To keep you alive.”

“You killed my mother.”

“To protect what she endangered.”

Nora removed her locket.

“I reject your claim.”

The first parental signature disappeared from the paper registry’s electronic copy.

Rachel’s transmitter flashed red.

Jonathan turned to Eva.

“Mia had a childhood. You had training. You are the daughter prepared to lead.”

Eva looked at Mia.

For years, both had been told the other possessed the life that should have belonged to them.

Eva faced Jonathan.

“I reject your name.”

The second signature weakened.

Jonathan looked at Mia.

“I am your father.”

“Yes.”

“Then acknowledge me.”

“Biology is not ownership.”

“Mia—”

“For thirteen years, I believed leaving the Mercers would make me ungrateful.”

She placed her hand beside Eva’s on the registry.

“I was wrong.”

The countdown reached one minute.

Jonathan moved toward the signing field.

Reed blocked him.

Mia entered three words into the archive.

THEN I’M OUT.

Eva repeated them.

Nora placed Celia’s bracelet into the final slot.

The archive accepted all three refusals.

COMMERCIAL CONTINUITY SEVERED.

PROTECTED CONTINUITY TRANSFERRED TO INDEPENDENT COURT CUSTODY.

Rachel pressed the transmitter.

Nothing happened.

Kyle ran toward the tunnel with the glass title plate.

Thomas intercepted the closing door, allowing officers to follow.

Jonathan attempted to remove his signature from the registry, but the system had already invalidated it.

Midnight arrived.

The room went silent.

Then a new message appeared.

FIRST DAUGHTER VERIFICATION INCOMPLETE.

SECOND DAUGHTER VERIFICATION INCOMPLETE.

A third line formed beneath them.

ADDITIONAL MERCER BENEFICIARY DETECTED.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

“That is impossible.”

May you like

The archive answered.

THREE SURVIVING DAUGHTERS CONFIRMED.
