Chapter 19 - The Woman Who Used Evelyn’s Face

A hidden panel opened behind the vault screen.
Eva stepped through it.
Two officers raised their weapons, but she slowly placed her bracelet on the floor and lifted her hands.
She appeared to be Mia’s age.
Her hair and clothing had made her resemble the older photographs of Evelyn, but without the shadows of the video call, the truth was impossible to ignore.
She and Mia had the same eyes.
The same height.
Even the same small line between their eyebrows when they were angry.
Jonathan took one step toward her.
Eva moved behind Reed.
“Do not let him touch me.”
Mia stared at her.
“You were with Kyle.”
“For six minutes.”
“You told me I was searching for the wrong Evelyn.”
“Because most of the recent documents carrying Evelyn’s identity were signed by me.”
Nora looked stunned.
“You impersonated her?”
“I was trained to reproduce her voice, handwriting, and financial behavior. Rachel called it continuity.”
“Where is the real Evelyn?”
“I don’t know.”
Jonathan interrupted.
“Rachel raised Eva to become a replacement identity. She did the same thing to other women.”
Eva turned on him.
“You created the program.”
“To protect witnesses.”
“And Rachel turned it into a market. That is the story you always tell.”
Mia picked up Eva’s bracelet.
It was nearly identical to Evelyn’s, but a tiny letter had been engraved inside the clasp.
B.
“Infant B,” Mia said.
Eva shook her head.
“Rachel said the letters were changed.”
“Then why come here?”
“Because Kyle found Thomas’s final ledger. He believed it could identify which daughter was born first.”
“Why would he tell you?”
“He thought I would help him take the archive from Jonathan.”
“And would you?”
Eva looked toward the glass title plate.
“I would destroy it.”
The answer sounded honest.
That did not make it safe.
Reed asked where Kyle had taken the ledger.
Eva removed a folded map from her coat.
“There is a property outside the city. Northbridge called it House Seventeen.”
Nora examined the address.
Her face lost its color.
“That was my childhood home.”

Eva looked at her.
“Then your mother left the ledger where she knew you would eventually return.”
