Chapter 32 - The Account Without Money

Thomas disconnected the public transmitter before the second identity was released.
Rachel did not attempt to stop him.
“The release is mirrored from another location,” she said. “You delayed it. You did not prevent it.”
The Ownership Title displayed two separate archives.
PROTECTED CONTINUITY.
COMMERCIAL CONTINUITY.
The first contained witnesses, endangered families, and undercover investigators.
The second contained stolen identities, shell-company owners, fabricated heirs, and dead people used to authorize financial transactions.
The same system held both.
Destroying everything would expose the innocent.
Preserving everything would protect the criminals.
“There has to be a way to separate them,” Mia said.
“There is,” Evelyn replied. “Celia designed one.”
Nora placed her locket into a narrow space beneath the title plate.
The archive recognized her.
CELIA WARD HEIR CONFIRMED.
A new option appeared.
SEVER COMMERCIAL CONTINUITY.
Two additional authorizations were required.
MORROW-MERCER PAIR.
Mia and Eva would have to agree.
Eva studied the screen.
“What happens after we sever it?”
“All commercial identities become invalid,” Thomas said. “The original evidence transfers to authorities. The witness identities remain protected.”
“And who controls those witness identities?”
Nora looked at the final line.
“No one. They move to independent court supervision.”
Jonathan stepped closer.
“That will expose operational weaknesses. Governments will fight over the files.”
“They should be supervised by courts,” Mia said.
“You trust courts because you have never seen how easily they are purchased.”
“I have seen how easily families are purchased.”
Rachel addressed Eva.
“Mia had a real education, a career, friends, and a life outside the program. You were trained for this. Why should she make the decision?”
Eva stared at the signing field.
It requested her full legal name.
EVA CELIA MORROW.
Mia’s field activated beside it.
MIA EVELYN MORROW.
Not Mercer.
The archive was attempting to complete Jonathan’s family line.
Mia deleted Morrow.
The system restored it automatically.
Jonathan looked almost relieved.
“The archive knows who you are.”
May you like
Mia met his eyes.
“No. It knows what you wrote.”
