Chapter 31 - The Name Beneath the Birth Certificate
Rachel opened the document case.
Inside were three original birth records.
Mia’s certificate listed Evelyn Mercer as her mother. The father’s line was blank.
Eva’s record used the name Eva Vale, with no parents listed.
Nora’s record identified Rachel Hayes as her mother and Thomas Hayes as her father.
Rachel placed a transparent sheet over the certificates.
Hidden text appeared.
Mia Evelyn Morrow.
Eva Celia Morrow.
Celia Nora Ward.
Nora stared at her true name.
Rachel had not given birth to her.
She had renamed her.
Jonathan placed the glass title plate into a metal stand.
“The archive requires the three heirs to acknowledge their legal identities.”
Mia studied the documents.
“Why is Eva’s middle name Celia?”
Evelyn answered.
“Celia helped me escape the hospital. I named one of you for her.”
“Which one?”
“I changed the records so many times that even Rachel could not prove it.”
Rachel’s patience thinned.
“The transfer must be completed before midnight.”
“And if we refuse?” Eva asked.
“The criminal identity layer and witness-protection layer will release together.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“You built that threat into the system.”
“I built consequences into freedom.”
Nora examined Celia’s birth record.
A second note had been written on the back.
THE OWNER DOES NOT INHERIT THE ARCHIVE.
THE OWNER INHERITS THE RIGHT TO END IT.
Nora showed it to Mia.
Jonathan saw the message.
His face changed.
Rachel closed the case.
“Celia was sentimental.”
“No,” Mia said. “She understood that no one should own people’s names.”
Rachel looked at the countdown.
“You have six hours to decide whether that belief is worth thousands of lives.”
A server in the corner began transmitting.
One protected file appeared on a public screen.
A woman living under a Northbridge identity had her original name, address, and testimony exposed.
Rachel looked at Nora.
“That was one.”
