Chapter 12 - Evelyn’s Final Instruction
Everyone in the office listened to the recording.
Evelyn’s voice was quiet but clear.
“I created the trust after discovering that Lorraine and Dean were using Northbridge Medical Logistics to move money through false shipping contracts. I intended to report them. Thomas Hayes agreed to help me gather evidence.
“Kyle discovered our plan.
“He was seventeen, but he was already involved. He copied financial records and warned Lorraine. They threatened Mia. I believed them.
“The crash was arranged to make me disappear. I was supposed to enter protective custody after providing evidence. Instead, the investigator assigned to move me was working for Dean.
“I escaped the first location, but not with the evidence.
“From that moment, Lorraine controlled the public story, Dean controlled the documents, and Kyle controlled access to Mia.
“I remained hidden because every attempt to contact my daughter created another threat against her.
“If Kyle is using this recording, he wants the primary account.
“The account does not contain money.
“It contains the original Northbridge records, witness statements, photographs, and the names of every person who helped them.
“Mia, if you are being forced to choose between saving me and protecting yourself, protect yourself.
“Refuse them.
“Once you do, the records will be released automatically.”
The audio ended.
Detective Reed turned toward Mia.
“What does refuse mean?”
“The account said it opens when I refuse the family.”
“The hearing,” Nora said. “Kyle expects her to surrender control.”
Mia looked at the time.
The hearing began in eight hours.
Reed organized protection for the courthouse and requested emergency warrants for every known Mercer property.
Brianna, still in custody after the station incident, refused to reveal Kyle’s location.
Lorraine and Dean were arrested when officers found forged identity documents inside a storage unit.
Dean asked to speak privately with Mia.
She agreed only after Reed placed a recording device on the table between them.
Dean looked older than he had days earlier. Without his tailored jacket and confident posture, he seemed smaller.
“Evelyn is alive,” Mia said.
Dean lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“You helped hide her.”
“I helped create the accident.”
Mia kept her hands beneath the table so he would not see them shaking.
“Was someone else in the car?”
Dean nodded.
“Who?”
“A woman named Celia Ward.”
“Why?”
“She worked for Northbridge. She discovered the false shipments.”
“You killed her.”
“I did not know Kyle had placed her in the vehicle.”
“Kyle was seventeen.”
“He was angry. Reckless.”
“He put a woman in a car and pushed it into a ravine?”
Dean closed his eyes.
“Lorraine told him it was the only way to make the crash believable.”
“And you protected them.”
“I protected the family.”
Mia almost laughed.
“That word again.”
Dean leaned forward.
“Listen to me. Kyle is dangerous because he believes everything belongs to him. Money, property, people. Evelyn understood too late.”
“Where is the primary account?”
“I never knew.”
“Who does?”
“Thomas.”
“Where is Thomas?”
“I don’t know.”
Mia stood.
Dean caught the edge of the table.
“There is something else.”
She stopped.
“The SUV loan was not about the SUV.”
“What was it about?”
“Kyle needed your signature profile.”
“For what?”
“To train a verification system.”
Mia slowly sat again.
“What system?”
“Once it learned your writing, your voice, your financial behavior, it could approve transfers from the primary account.”
“He used the car payment to see whether I would notice.”
“Yes.”
“And when I refused?”
“He knew he had run out of time.”
“Why?”
