Chapter 33 - The Family That Was Purchased
Evelyn finally explained the payments.
After the twins were separated, Jonathan located Mia through Lorraine.
He offered the Mercers monthly protection payments on the condition that Mia remained in the city, attended regular family gatherings, and never investigated Evelyn’s disappearance.
Lorraine accepted.
Dean handled the false records.
Kyle collected Mia’s behavioral and financial samples.
Brianna benefited from the money and asked few questions.
“They were not raising me,” Mia said. “They were maintaining me.”
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
Jonathan stepped toward her.
“I believed Lorraine’s reports.”
“You believed reports because meeting your daughter would have required facing what you created.”
“I was trying to dismantle Rachel’s system.”
“For twenty-six years?”
Rachel smiled.
“Jonathan never wanted the system dismantled. He wanted it returned.”
Eva looked at Jonathan.
“You visited me every birthday.”
“To make sure Rachel had not replaced you.”
“You tested me.”
“I prepared you.”
“For what?”
“To survive Mia.”
The words struck the room harder than a shout.
Jonathan had told each sister the other could become a threat.
Rachel had done the same.
They had spent twenty-six years preparing two daughters to distrust each other.
Eva moved toward the signing field.
Jonathan watched hopefully.
She placed her hand above the screen.
Then she erased Morrow from her name.
“A name someone purchased is not a family,” she said.
Mia stood beside her.
Together, they entered the names they chose.
Mia Evelyn Mercer.
Eva Mercer.
The archive rejected both.
IDENTITY CONFLICT.
Rachel checked the countdown.
Four hours remained.
A public alert sounded.
Another protected identity had been released.
News reports began appearing across Mia’s phone. Commentators blamed the Mercer trust scandal. Some claimed Mia had deliberately exposed the witness.
Kyle laughed from the shadows near the loading door.
“They are turning against you already.”
Mia faced him.
“They turned against a version of me created by your system.”
“That version is the only one the world sees.”
“Then I will give them another.”
Mia activated the room’s recording system.
For the first time since the case became public, she prepared to tell the world what Northbridge had built.
