Chapter 18 - The Vault Beneath the Dealership

Adrian Bell closed the dealership before Mia arrived.
He waited beside the corporate records office with two federal agents and a ring of old brass keys.
“My grandfather built the original building,” Adrian explained. “He told my father there was a lower level, but no one had accessed it in decades.”
Jonathan, still under guard, examined the keys.
“Those won’t open it.”
Adrian frowned.
“How would you know?”
“Because the lower level was designed to be opened by an identity, not a key.”
They entered the service elevator.
The control panel displayed buttons for three floors, but Jonathan pressed the blank space beneath the basement button.
A scanner illuminated.
“Do not touch it,” Reed warned.
Jonathan stepped back.
“Mia has to.”
Mia placed her palm against the panel.
Nothing happened.
Eva’s silver bracelet remained on the table at Mia’s house, but Mia had brought Evelyn’s recovered bracelet in an evidence bag.
She held it near the scanner.
The elevator descended.
Beneath the dealership was a concrete corridor leading to a steel vault door. Four circular spaces had been built into its center.
Only one contained a silver case.
The other three spaces were empty.
Inside the remaining case, they found an original corporate transfer, two infant footprint cards, and a narrow glass plate etched with lines of legal text.
Both footprint cards carried the same surname.
Mercer.
Neither had a first name.
Adrian examined the ownership document.
“The purchasing authority is listed as two unborn beneficiaries.”
Mia read the names.
Mia Evelyn Mercer.
Eva Evelyn Mercer.
Jonathan stood behind her.
“Evelyn intended each daughter to hold half.”
“Then why does the countdown choose one controller?”
“Someone amended the agreement after the twins were separated.”
The vault lights dimmed.
A screen on the far wall activated.
Eva appeared.
This time, Kyle was not beside her.
“You should not have brought Jonathan,” she said.
Mia stepped closer.
“Are you my sister?”
Eva’s expression remained controlled.
“That depends on which birth record you believe.”
“Where are you?”
“Closer than your mother.”
Jonathan moved toward the screen.
“Eva, Rachel lied to you.”
Eva laughed quietly.
“You visited me every birthday until I turned eighteen. Do not pretend you were protecting only Mia.”
Reed looked sharply at Jonathan.
Eva raised her bracelet.
“Two bracelets open the title. Three bracelets change it. Four destroy it.”
The silver case began producing a steady tone.
A mechanical voice filled the vault.
“First daughter recognized.”
Mia looked at Eva’s face on the screen.
May you like
“Which one of us?”
The screen went black before Eva answered.
