Chapter 29 - Marianne’s Mug

Claire invited Elias to her apartment for dinner.
The rooms were small but bright. Photographs of friends filled the walls, and Marianne’s blue mug stood beside the kitchen window.
Elias noticed a second mug in the cabinet.
He raised an eyebrow.
“It’s for guests,” Claire said.
“Of course.”
She had begun attending counseling and reconnecting with friends Ryan had pushed away.
Some relationships returned easily.
Others did not.
Healing was not a dramatic transformation. It was a collection of ordinary choices: answering messages, sleeping through the night, buying food Ryan once criticized and learning that silence did not always mean danger.
After dinner, Claire handed Elias a framed photograph.
It showed them leaving Vanguard on fight night.
Claire was walking slightly ahead.
Elias was beside her, not blocking her path.
At the bottom of the frame, she had written:
Thank you for standing beside me.
Elias read the words twice.
“I wasn’t always good at that.”
“You learned.”
“So did you.”
They drank coffee near the window.
For years, the second mug in Elias’s house had represented someone who could never return.

Now the two mugs in Claire’s apartment represented something different.
A future large enough to welcome people without surrendering herself to them.
