Chapter 27 - What Marcus Said
Marcus Hill was the final witness.
He described the training session that had ended his career.
He explained that he felt confused and unsteady, but Ryan demanded that the sparring continue.
The defense attorney suggested Marcus wanted money.
Marcus looked toward the jury.
“I wanted to fight,” he said. “That was the problem. I trusted my coaches to stop me when I could no longer make a safe decision.”
He identified Ryan’s voice in Noah’s recording.
Calvin’s documents confirmed the cover-up.
Noah testified next.
Rosa followed him.
One by one, the people Ryan had isolated entered the courtroom and discovered they were no longer alone.
The jury deliberated for two days.
Ryan was convicted on multiple counts. Additional civil cases remained pending.
When the verdict was announced, he showed no emotion.
Claire did not celebrate.
Outside the courthouse, reporters asked whether she felt victorious.
“This was never a competition,” she said. “People were harmed. The truth being recognized matters, but healing is a different process.”
Elias watched her answer.
She no longer searched the crowd for his approval.
