Vanguard Combat Club closed permanently.
Months later, Claire returned to the empty building with Noah, Marcus and Rosa.
The banners had been removed.
Dust covered the cage.
Without lights and cheering crowds, the gym appeared smaller than Claire remembered.
“This place used to feel like the whole world,” Noah said.
Marcus touched the cage fence.
“It was designed to.”
A nonprofit organization purchased the property. Its directors planned to turn it into a community training center with independent medical oversight, transparent contracts and free classes for young adults who could not afford membership.
They asked Marcus to advise on athlete safety.
Noah became an assistant coach.
Rosa accepted a paid position managing the facility.
Claire volunteered to supervise its financial systems.
She insisted that no single person control athlete contracts, medical decisions and sponsorship money.
Elias declined an offer to become head coach.
“I’m retired,” he said.
Claire laughed.
“You repair chairs for three hours a day.”
“Chairs rarely challenge my authority.”
Eventually, he agreed to teach one weekly class.
Its title was not fighting or self-defense.
