Chapter 26 - The Charges

Ryan faced charges connected to financial fraud, witness intimidation, stalking and destruction of evidence.

Calvin was also charged.

His cooperation reduced some consequences but did not erase his responsibility.

Blackridge Nutrition claimed it had known nothing about the misconduct. Internal emails later showed that executives had received complaints months earlier and failed to investigate.

The company created a compensation fund after public pressure increased.

Claire disliked the word compensation.

“No payment returns the years they lost,” she told Maya.

“No,” Maya replied. “But accountability can prevent more losses.”

Ryan’s legal team tried to exclude Claire’s evidence by arguing that she had accessed private files without authorization.

Digital specialists demonstrated that Claire had been given the laptop and instructed to organize the financial documents.

The defense then attacked her character.

Claire expected this.

She answered every question calmly.

When asked why she had remained with Ryan after becoming afraid, she replied:

“Because fear does not always tell you to run. Sometimes it tells you that leaving will make everything worse.”

Several jurors looked directly at her.

Elias sat in the second row.

He never interrupted.

He never reacted when Ryan stared at him.

He had promised to stand beside Claire rather than in front of her.

He kept that promise.
