Chapter 20 - The Fighter Who Chose the Door

Vanguard continued operating despite the investigation.
Ryan told fighters that anyone who left would be blacklisted from professional competition.
Some believed him.
Others began quietly packing their equipment.
A nineteen-year-old amateur named Lucas Grant was the first to leave publicly.
He placed his gym shirt on the front desk.
Ryan blocked the exit.
“You walk out now, you never come back.”
Lucas looked frightened.
Before he could answer, Noah entered with Maya Chen and two cameras.
Ryan stepped away from the door.
Lucas walked out.
The video spread across social media.
By evening, eleven more athletes resigned.
A rival gym offered them temporary training space. Local doctors volunteered to review their injuries. Attorneys offered to examine their contracts.
Ryan’s kingdom had depended on each person believing they were alone.
Once one fighter walked through the door, the others saw that leaving was possible.
Elias watched the footage with Claire.
“You didn’t rescue them,” he said.
“No.”
“You showed them the exit.”
Claire thought about the night she climbed through Ryan’s bathroom window.

She understood that courage did not always look like entering a cage.
Sometimes it looked like walking away while someone shouted that you would regret it.
