Chapter 22 - Elias Refused the Plan
Detective Ortiz strongly advised Claire not to enter the gym.
Ryan was unstable, and hundreds of supporters would be present.
Claire proposed a controlled approach.
Maya Chen would attend as accredited media. Investigators would remain nearby. Claire would reveal the verified documents before Ryan could present his false accusations.
Elias refused.
“It’s too dangerous.”
Claire stared at him.
“You said I should make my own choices.”
“I didn’t say I had to like them.”
“You’re protecting me by deciding for me.”
The words struck him harder than Ryan’s insults ever had.
Claire softened her voice.
“I know you’re afraid.”
“I am.”
“So am I.”
Elias turned toward the window.
During his years as an instructor, he had taught commanders that protecting people did not mean removing their agency.
Yet with Claire, fear had changed the rule.
He faced her again.
“What do you need from me?”
“Stand beside me. Don’t stand in front of me.”
Elias nodded.
Together, they created a safety plan with investigators.
Claire would never be alone.
She would not enter the cage.
She would leave at the first sign of danger.
Elias agreed to every condition.
Before they finished, Claire added one of her own.
“No matter what Ryan says, you will not fight him.”
