Chapter 17 - Ryan’s Perfect Interview

Ryan appeared on a popular sports program.
He wore a dark suit and spoke softly.
He said Claire had struggled emotionally after her mother’s death. He claimed Elias was controlling and had never accepted their relationship.
“I still care about her,” Ryan told the interviewer. “I hope she gets help.”
The performance was convincing.
Claire watched from Elias’s living room.
For several minutes, she doubted herself.
Ryan sounded reasonable. Concerned. Almost kind.
Then Elias paused the recording.
“What happened just before you called me from the bathroom?” he asked.
Claire closed her eyes.
“I told him I wanted to leave.”
“What did he say?”
“That no one else would ever tolerate me.”
“What did he do?”
“He blocked the door and took my phone.”
“Does a television interview change that?”
“No.”
“Then do not measure the truth by how calmly someone lies.”
Claire replayed the interview.
This time she noticed Ryan never directly denied the financial records, the threats or the surveillance.
He focused only on her character.
Maya Chen noticed the same thing.
Her article was published the following morning.
The headline did not call Ryan guilty.
