Chapter 15 - Claire Returned to Work

Claire’s employer placed her on temporary leave after Ryan publicly accused her of financial theft.
Though the company claimed the leave was neutral, Claire understood what it meant.
Ryan’s lie had entered her professional life.
She considered resigning.
Instead, she requested a formal meeting.
Claire sat before three executives and presented a timeline of events. She explained what information she had accessed, why it was connected to Ryan’s business and how she preserved the records.
She did not describe herself as helpless.
She described herself as a witness.
The company’s legal director reviewed her evidence.
“You should have disclosed your relationship to the client,” he said.
“You’re right,” Claire replied. “That was an error.”
The executives seemed surprised that she did not argue.
“But I did not steal money,” she continued. “And I will not accept disciplinary action based on a public accusation without evidence.”
After two hours, the company reinstated her pending the investigation.
Outside the building, Elias waited beside his truck.
“You didn’t have to come,” Claire said.
“I know.”
She smiled.
For the first time since leaving Ryan, she had defended herself without her father speaking for her.
