Chapter 18 - The Locked Room
Police executed a search warrant at Vanguard before sunrise.
The storage room beneath the gym had been emptied.
Only dust outlines remained where boxes had stood.
Calvin claimed the room stored cleaning supplies.
Rosa’s photographs proved otherwise.
Officers found shredded paper inside an industrial trash container behind the building. Technicians recovered portions of contracts and medical documents.
Ryan arrived while the search was underway.
He remained outside the police barrier, smiling for reporters.
“This is harassment,” he declared.
Then he saw Marcus Hill step out of Detective Ortiz’s vehicle.
Ryan stopped smiling.
Marcus walked with a slight limp.
He did not approach Ryan.
He simply entered the gym with investigators.
Inside, Marcus identified the room where he had been pressured to sign the settlement. He also recognized the names on several recovered documents.
Ryan called Calvin repeatedly.
Calvin did not answer.
He had disappeared before the search began.
His car was later found at the airport, but passenger records showed he had not boarded a flight.
The investigators realized Calvin wanted them to believe he had fled.
Elias suspected something else.
