Chapter 8 - The Family Account
The financial consequences arrived the following Monday.
Adrian froze all disputed payments, canceled the Laurent family’s resort reservations, and instructed Daniel to seek repayment for unauthorized charges. He also sent every vendor a clear statement: legitimate wedding expenses would be honored in full.
Vanessa attempted to control the story online.
She claimed Adrian had abandoned her because his mother was jealous. She described herself as a victim of a wealthy family protecting its image.
For several hours, strangers believed her.
Then the bridal consultant confirmed that staff had witnessed serious mistreatment of an elderly guest. The venue kept its footage private, but several guests had recorded Vanessa’s words.
More damaging than the videos were the invoices.
Raymond’s consulting company had no employees, no office, and no record of work. Celeste’s shopping charges included jewelry purchased in her own name. The family villa had been booked for a month, not a wedding weekend.
Vanessa’s public story collapsed.
Adrian did not celebrate.
He asked Daniel to recover what was legally owed and nothing more.
“I do not want revenge,” he said. “I want the boundary restored.”
The Laurents repaid part of the money to avoid a civil case. The remaining balance was covered by selling the jewelry and canceling several reservations.
Vanessa sent Adrian one final message.
You ruined my life.
He read it once, then deleted it.
