Chapter 25 - The Second Key
Elena placed the cane across the dining table.
It was the same dark wooden cane she had carried into Vanessa’s bridal room. The same cane Vanessa had struck aside. The same cane Elena had later refused to hide at the opening of the Dignity Fund.
Adrian examined the gold handle.
“There is no keyhole.”
“It was repaired after my fall,” Elena said. “The original handle was slightly loose.”
Daniel carefully turned the gold cap.
It separated from the wood.
A narrow key slid into Elena’s palm.
A piece of paper had been wrapped around it.
The paper was yellow with age, and Martin’s handwriting covered only one side.
Elena,
Account 417 was never created to hide money.
It was created to reveal the person willing to move it.
If the account becomes active after Graham is stopped, then Graham was never the final threat.
Trust the evidence, not the name beside it.
The message ended there.
On the other side of the paper, Martin had written an address.
It belonged to a private vault beneath the original Vale Hotel.
Adrian, Elena, and Daniel went there the following morning.
The second key opened a narrow metal compartment containing one sealed envelope.
Daniel reached for it, but Elena stopped him.
Her name was written across the front.
Beneath it appeared a warning.
Open only when Account 417 sends money to the fund.
Elena broke the seal.
Inside was a photograph of Martin standing beside a younger Daniel Cross.
Daniel appeared to be no more than twenty-five years old.
Neither Adrian nor Elena had known the two men had met before Daniel became the family’s attorney.
A typed financial statement was attached to the photograph.
It showed Daniel receiving a payment from Aurora Trust shortly before Martin’s death.
Adrian slowly turned toward him.
“What is this?”
Daniel looked genuinely shaken.
“I have never seen that statement.”
A final handwritten note slipped from the envelope.
Elena picked it up.
There were only two sentences.
Daniel Cross will tell you he does not remember me.
Do not believe him until he tells you what happened in Room 417.
The vault door closed behind them.
Then Daniel whispered a name Elena had not heard in twenty-three years.
