Chapter 1 - The Perfect Bride

Six months earlier, Vanessa Laurent had entered Adrian Vale’s life like a carefully arranged photograph.

She was elegant, polished, and always knew what to say. She remembered donors’ names, praised Adrian gracefully, and spoke about family, loyalty, and a meaningful future.

Adrian had spent most of his adult life protecting Vale Hospitality, founded by his late father. Vanessa claimed she cared more about quiet mornings than private jets and more about trust than jewelry.

Elena wanted to believe her. Adrian was her only son, and she was relieved to see him happy. Still, Vanessa’s kindness felt rehearsed. She was warm when Adrian watched and impatient when he left.

At their engagement dinner, Elena accidentally spilled water near Vanessa’s handbag.

Vanessa laughed lightly and said, “Please do not worry.”

Later, when Adrian stepped away to answer a call, Vanessa leaned close.

“That bag costs more than most people’s cars,” she whispered. “Try to be careful.”

Elena said nothing. She had survived grief, illness, and the difficult early years of the family business. She also knew that accusing a charming person too early could make the accuser look cruel.

So she watched.

And Vanessa, believing the elderly woman powerless, became less careful.
