Chapter 16 - The Brother Martin Protected

Elena had known that Martin and Graham once disagreed about the company.
She had never known money was involved.
The restitution agreement showed that Graham had diverted vendor payments during the construction of the third Vale Hotel. Martin discovered the missing funds before the company suffered permanent damage.
Instead of reporting his brother, Martin required him to repay the money and leave the business.
“Why did Graham return?” Adrian asked.
“Your father became ill,” Elena said. “Graham came to the hospital and apologized. Martin believed losing ten years with his brother had changed him.”
Graham rejoined Vale Hospitality as an unpaid adviser. After Martin’s death, the board gradually restored his authority.
Adrian had supported every promotion.
The brass key led Daniel to a bank branch used by Martin during the company’s early years.
The safe-deposit box was still registered to Vale Heritage Services. Daniel obtained a court order allowing it to be opened because of the suspected misuse of company funds.
Inside were copies of the original Account 417 statements.
Martin had kept the account active as a warning system.
Any transaction would be reported privately to Samuel Trent, who had helped uncover Graham’s first scheme.
But Samuel died before the account was reactivated.
Someone had redirected the alerts.
The box also contained a sealed memorandum addressed to the Vale Hospitality board.
Martin described Graham’s earlier misconduct and warned that he should never receive unrestricted financial authority again.
Adrian sat silently after reading it.
“My father knew Graham might return.”
“He hoped he would not,” Elena said.
Daniel found one additional document.
It was a draft agreement transferring control of several Vale properties to a holding company after a “leadership emergency.”
The agreement required three conditions: evidence of financial negligence, a vote removing Adrian, and the signature of a temporary trustee.
That trustee was Graham Vale.
Vanessa’s wedding authorization would have created the evidence. The inflated charges would have triggered the emergency. Graham’s influence over the board would provide the vote.
The wedding had not merely been an opportunity to steal money.
It had been the first stage of a corporate takeover.
Before Daniel could copy the document, Adrian received an emergency message from the board secretary.
Graham had called a special meeting for the following morning.
