Chapter 2 - The Woman Vanessa Wanted Hidden
Wedding preparations moved quickly. Vanessa chose imported flowers, crystal place settings, and a designer gown requiring three fittings. Her parents, Raymond and Celeste Laurent, behaved as though the engagement had elevated their entire family.
They requested upgraded hotel suites for relatives Adrian had never met. They added a second reception dinner, a luxury car service, and a weeklong resort stay after the ceremony. Each request arrived disguised as tradition.
“It means so much to my family,” Vanessa would say.
Adrian approved most expenses because he wanted peace. He assumed generosity would create goodwill.
Elena rarely complained, but Vanessa soon began removing her from decisions.
The first seating plan placed Elena at the same table as Adrian. The next version moved her near the kitchen doors.
When Adrian asked why, Vanessa smiled.
“She told me she wanted somewhere quiet.”
Elena had said no such thing.
Vanessa also changed Elena’s transportation, assigning her a late car that would arrive after the family photographs. She told the photographer that Elena tired easily and should not be included in long sessions.
Each time Adrian noticed, Vanessa offered an explanation. Each explanation sounded reasonable alone.
Together, they formed a pattern.
Elena finally spoke to her son one evening in his study.
“I do not want you to choose between us,” she said. “But I need you to see how differently she behaves when you are not present.”
Adrian listened, troubled.
He loved his mother, but he also feared becoming the kind of man who let suspicion destroy his future.

Vanessa was already counting on him doing the opposite.
