Chapter 20 - The Name Elena Buried

Amelia Grant had been a young attorney when Martin and Graham opened their first hotel.
She negotiated the building lease, recruited early investors, and worked for nearly a year without regular payment.
Then a dispute ended her relationship with the brothers.
The official story claimed Amelia accepted a settlement and moved overseas.
The truth was more complicated.
“Amelia believed she had been promised part ownership,” Elena explained. “Martin said she was an adviser, not a partner. Graham supported her claim whenever it benefited him and denied it whenever Martin confronted him.”
“Was Marianne working for Amelia?” Adrian asked.
Elena shook her head.
“Marianne was Amelia.”
After leaving the company, Amelia Grant changed her surname through marriage. Years later, she returned as Marianne Cole and built a respected legal career.
Martin recognized her immediately.
He allowed her to serve as outside counsel because she claimed the past was settled.
After Martin died, Marianne became the company’s general counsel.
“She spent years placing herself beside every important document,” Daniel said.
The name “the founder” was not a title others had given her.
It was how Marianne saw herself.
Adrian, Elena, Daniel, and hotel security entered the room Marianne had reserved.
She was gone.
On the desk stood a portable shredder and a half-empty cup of coffee. Papers had been destroyed, but several fragments remained beneath the machine.
Daniel reconstructed part of a sentence.
Upon marriage, spousal authority may be recognized during incapacity—
The wedding plan had included another layer.
If Adrian married Vanessa and was later declared temporarily incapable of managing company matters, Vanessa could have claimed authority over certain private trusts. Marianne’s documents would then direct that authority toward Graham.
They found a photograph inside the bedside drawer.
It showed Martin, Graham, and Amelia standing outside the unfinished first Vale Hotel.
On the back, Amelia had written:
Three founders built it.
Only two names survived.
Beneath the photograph was a key card for the hotel’s abandoned records level.
The old floor had been sealed during renovations.
When security opened it, Adrian found rows of dusty cabinets.
One drawer stood open.
