Chapter 21 - The Contingency File
The file contained medical forms, unsigned guardianship papers, and draft statements describing Elena as confused and financially dependent.
None of them were genuine.
Marianne had planned to remove Elena’s voting authority by portraying her as incapable of managing the family trust.
Vanessa’s treatment of Elena now appeared even more useful to the conspiracy. Isolating her from company dinners and public photographs would make her absence seem natural.
“If the wedding had happened, they would have removed both of us,” Adrian said.
“First from the company,” Elena replied. “Then from our own decisions.”
A second folder held reports on Adrian’s personal life, including his travel schedule, friendships, and charitable donations.
Graham had studied him for years.
He knew Adrian’s greatest weakness was not greed.
It was his desire to avoid conflict.
Daniel found a portable drive taped beneath the bottom drawer.
It contained emails between Graham and Marianne.
They discussed the Laurents, the false wedding invoices, the board vote, and the edited recording.
One message had been sent the morning after Adrian canceled the wedding.
The bride failed. Move to the mother.
The order came from Marianne.
Another message showed that Graham had hesitated to target Elena.
Marianne reminded him that he would never control the company while Elena retained the founder’s shares.
The evidence was enough for Daniel to request immediate court restrictions on Graham and Marianne’s access to company assets.
Graham was ordered to surrender his corporate devices and financial records.
Marianne remained missing.
That evening, Vanessa arrived at the fund office with a small black phone.
“My father kept this hidden behind a drawer,” she said. “It was used only for messages from Graham.”
Most of the conversations matched the recovered emails.
But the newest message had been sent after the court restricted Graham’s accounts.
It contained an address and a time.
Midnight.
Come alone if you want your family protected.
The message was addressed to Vanessa.
Elena told her not to go.
Vanessa looked at the screen.
“This may be our only chance to find Marianne.”
“No,” Adrian said. “It may be her chance to make another person disappear.”
