Chapter 22 - Midnight at the First Hotel

The address led back to the first Vale Hotel.
At midnight, the lobby was almost empty. Vanessa entered through the main doors while investigators watched from adjoining rooms and security cameras recorded every corridor.
She carried the black phone but no other belongings.
The message instructed her to take the service elevator to the abandoned records level.
When the doors opened, Marianne was waiting.
She wore a dark suit and held a slim folder.
“You should have left the city,” Marianne said.
“You threatened Elena.”
“I warned you about consequences.”
“You used my family.”
Marianne smiled without warmth.
“Your family arrived ready to be used.”
Vanessa asked why she had been chosen.
“Because Adrian wanted to believe in you. Graham wanted to believe in himself. Raymond wanted money. Everyone opened the door they were already standing beside.”
“And Elena?”
“Elena was the only person who never wanted anything from me. That made her difficult to control.”
Marianne offered Vanessa money and a new identity in exchange for a statement claiming Adrian and Daniel had fabricated the evidence.
Vanessa refused.
“I lied for you before. It cost me everything.”
“No,” Marianne said. “Your character cost you everything.”
Vanessa flinched because the words were true.
Then she asked the question Daniel had prepared.
“Where is the original ownership agreement?”
Marianne’s expression changed.
For years, she had claimed that Martin destroyed a document granting her part of the company.
Now her silence confirmed it still existed.
“You have it,” Vanessa said.
Marianne stepped toward her.
Before she could answer, the corridor lights came on.
Daniel, investigators, and hotel security entered from both ends.
Marianne did not resist.
She placed the folder on the floor.
Inside was no ownership agreement.
Only a list of bank transfers leading from Account 417 to another entity.
Aurora Trust.
“You think Graham was the end of this?” Marianne asked Elena as she was escorted past her.
Elena remained composed.
“Who controls Aurora Trust?”
May you like
Marianne smiled.
“The only person Martin feared more than his brother.”
