Chapter 15 - The Missing Box
The storage company’s records showed that Margaret’s unit had been opened using a duplicate access card.
Security footage revealed a man in a gray coat removing one large archive box.
Daniel recognized him as Oliver Kane, Graham’s executive assistant.
Adrian confronted Oliver before he could leave the headquarters building.
Oliver denied knowing anything about the storage unit until Adrian showed him the image.
Then his confidence disappeared.
“Mr. Vale told me it contained old hotel contracts,” Oliver said.
“Which Mr. Vale?” Daniel asked.
Oliver looked toward Adrian but did not answer.
Graham had instructed him to collect the box and deliver it to a private auction warehouse outside the city. Oliver claimed he never opened it.
By the time Daniel obtained access to the warehouse, most of the contents had been divided into separate lots.
The archive box itself was empty.
A warehouse employee remembered finding several tapes, notebooks, and an old brass key inside. Believing they were worthless, he had placed them in a miscellaneous estate sale.
Daniel located the buyer.
She was a retired teacher who had purchased the lot for an antique clock included with the papers. She had not thrown anything away.
That evening, Adrian, Elena, Daniel, and Margaret gathered around Elena’s dining table as the recovered contents were unpacked.
There were hotel inspection reports, handwritten payroll notes, and minutes from early company meetings.
At the bottom lay a small cassette tape and a brass key.
A paper label was tied to the key.
Daniel turned it over in his hand.
“This is not a bank account key,” he said. “It belongs to a safe-deposit box.”
The cassette carried Martin Vale’s handwriting.
For Elena only.
They found an old player in the residence library.
Martin’s voice emerged beneath a layer of static.
“Elena, if you are hearing this, Graham has returned to the account.”
Adrian stopped breathing for a moment.
Martin continued.
“I gave my brother one chance to repair what he had done. I fear that mercy will be mistaken for weakness.”
The recording ended abruptly.
The final portion of the tape had been erased.
But beneath the cassette was a folded document none of them had noticed.
