Chapter 23 - The Fall of Graham Vale
The evidence recovered from the records floor ended Graham’s control over Vale Hospitality.
The board removed him as vice chairman. His voting rights were suspended, and an independent committee began reviewing every transaction he had approved.
Graham continued denying that he intended to take the company.
He claimed Marianne had manipulated him using old resentment toward Martin.
Adrian visited him once before the formal hearing.
They met in a private legal office with Daniel present.
“You taught me how to read a balance sheet,” Adrian said. “You stood beside me after my father died. Was any of it real?”
Graham looked older without the authority of the boardroom surrounding him.
“Some of it.”
“Which part?”
“I loved your father. I also hated living beneath his name.”
“So you tried to take everything he left.”
“I tried to prove I could have built it without him.”
“You used me to do it.”
Graham looked away.
“I expected you to sign the authorization. I expected you to defend Vanessa because admitting the truth would embarrass you.”
“You were right about the man I was.”
Graham turned back toward him.
“And the man you are now?”
“He canceled the wedding.”
Adrian stood and left.
Marianne’s documents, Vanessa’s testimony, Raymond’s confession, and the recovered recordings established the structure of the conspiracy.
The false Dignity Fund payments were reversed. The fund was publicly cleared of wrongdoing, and every legitimate beneficiary continued receiving assistance.
Vanessa accepted responsibility for her role. She surrendered the remaining gifts Adrian had purchased and agreed to repay what she could over time.
Elena did not forgive her.
But she acknowledged that Vanessa had finally told the truth when lying would have been easier.
The board offered Adrian a public statement declaring complete victory.
He refused the word.
“There was no victory,” he said. “There was damage, accountability, and a chance to rebuild.”
The statement was published without celebration.
Yet one question remained.
Aurora Trust had received seven transfers from Account 417.
Neither Graham nor Marianne was listed as its controller.
Daniel requested the trust records.
