Chapter 18 - Martin’s Voice
The recording appeared online before Daniel received an official copy.
Martin’s voice was unmistakable.
“Adrian lacks judgment,” he said. “He cannot be trusted with the future of this company.”
The clip lasted nine seconds.
Investors reacted immediately. Vale Hospitality’s share price fell, reporters gathered outside the headquarters, and several directors who had supported Adrian began avoiding his calls.
Adrian listened to the recording alone in his father’s former office.
“What if he truly believed it?” he asked Elena.
“He was worried about you sometimes,” she replied honestly. “You were young, impatient, and determined to please everyone.”
“That sounds like a polite way of saying the recording is real.”
“The voice may be real. The sentence is not complete.”
Elena remembered the conversation.
It had occurred during a private dinner after Adrian approved an expensive renovation without reviewing the final costs. Martin had been angry.
But he had not ended the discussion with condemnation.
He had ended it with hope.
Margaret examined the recovered cassette tapes again. One had no label, only a faded blue mark.
The retired teacher had almost discarded it because the plastic case was cracked.
When Daniel played it, they heard glasses being placed on a table, Martin coughing, and then the beginning of the same conversation.
“Adrian lacks judgment when he is afraid of disappointing people,” Martin said. “He cannot be trusted with the future of this company until he learns that leadership sometimes means saying no.”
A second voice asked, “And when he learns?”
Martin answered without hesitation.
“Then he will be better than either of us, Graham.”
The nine-second clip had removed the beginning and the end.
Daniel commissioned an independent audio examination. The result confirmed that the public recording had been edited from the longer conversation.
Adrian released the complete audio alongside the expert report.
Public opinion began to shift.
But Elena focused on a different detail.
The conversation had been recorded in Martin’s private dining room.
Only four people had attended: Martin, Elena, Graham, and the lawyer responsible for the company’s estate documents.
