Chapter 38 - The Choice
Ryan sent a location.
An abandoned lakeside hotel.
Margaret arrived with Arthur and the police.
But the building was empty.
Only a recording waited in the lobby.
Ryan's voice played.
“You always chose Emily.”
Margaret looked around.
“You loved the daughter you could see.”
The recording continued.
“So I wanted you to understand what it felt like to lose the other.”
Claire appeared behind her.
Margaret turned.
“Where's Emily?”
Claire pointed toward the lake.
A boat was moving away.
Emily stood inside.
Ryan beside her.
Margaret screamed.
The police chased the boat.
Arthur ran toward the dock.
Claire grabbed Margaret.
“Wait.”
“She's my daughter!”
“I know.”
“Then let me go!”
Claire pointed toward the opposite shore.
A second boat was approaching.
Someone stood inside.
Margaret's breath stopped.
It was Ryan.
But the man on the first boat was someone else.
A disguise.
