Chapter 28 - The Recording
The police entered the mansion.
Victor Hale was arrested outside.
Linda dropped the weapon.
Ryan tried to run.
Arthur stopped him.
For the first time, Ryan looked afraid.
Margaret watched silently.
An officer approached.
“Mrs. Ashford?”
“Yes.”
“We found something you need to hear.”
He handed her a recorder.
Thomas's voice filled the room.
“If you are hearing this, I failed to protect Claire.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“But I succeeded in protecting the evidence.”
A second voice appeared.
Linda.
You promised the girl would disappear.
Thomas answered:
“She is not yours to disappear.”
Linda's recorded voice became angry.
“Neither is Margaret's house.”
Margaret opened her eyes.
The recording continued.
“I know about the trust.”
Linda said:
“Then you know what happens if Margaret learns the truth.”
Thomas replied:
“She already knows enough.”
A pause.
Then Linda whispered:
“Then she'll have to die.”
The recording ended.
Arthur looked at Linda.
Linda lowered her head.
But Claire noticed something.
“Wait.”

She took the recorder.
“There is another file.”
