Chapter 32 - The Sister Nobody Knew

The answer came from Claire.
“Me.”
Margaret stared.
“You?”
Claire nodded.
“I took the sample.”
“Why?”
“To find out whether I was really your daughter.”
Margaret's expression changed.
“And?”
Claire looked away.
“I don't know.”
“You don't know?”
“The results were altered.”
Margaret stepped closer.
“By whom?”
Claire opened her mouth.
A gunshot shattered the station window.
Everyone dropped.
The lights went out.
When they came back, the DNA report was gone.
So was Claire.
Margaret screamed her name.
Arthur ran outside.
Nothing.
Only a black car disappearing into traffic.
On the floor lay Claire's red folder.
Open to one photograph.
A young woman standing beside Walter Ashford.
Margaret recognized her.
She had seen that face before.
In the hospital.
In the old family album.
In a photograph dated 1978.
Her mother.

Margaret whispered:
“My mother knew Claire.”
