Chapter 22 - The Call

Margaret answered.
“Hello?”
Ryan's voice came through.
“Mom.”
She said nothing.
“I know you're angry.”
“You broke into my house.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
Margaret laughed bitterly.
“From what?”
Silence.
Then Ryan said:
“From Claire.”
Margaret looked toward the woman standing across the room.
“What did she do?”
“Ask her where she was for the last twenty years.”
Claire's expression remained unreadable.
Ryan continued.
“She isn't the victim you think she is.”
Margaret tightened her grip on the phone.
“What does that mean?”
“Come home alone.”
“This is my home.”
“Then come back alone.”
Margaret's voice hardened.
“Where are you?”
“Inside your house.”
The line disconnected.
Arthur immediately moved toward the stairs.
Claire stopped him.
“No.”
“He's here.”
“That's what he wants.”
Margaret stared at Claire.
“Why?”
Claire looked at the phone.
“Because Ryan knows something.”
“What?”

Claire's eyes hardened.
“He knows who killed Thomas.”
