Chapter 27 - The First Daughter

Ryan pointed the gun at Claire.
Margaret stepped between them.
“Put it down.”
Ryan laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
“I understand enough.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“Claire can't inherit.”
“Why?”
“Because she died.”
Claire's expression hardened.
“I've been standing here for twenty years.”
Ryan looked at her.
“Legally, you're dead.”
Margaret's heart sank.
Ryan explained.
“The woman who died in that accident was Claire Bennett.”
Claire stared.
“Exactly.”
“You changed my identity.”
Ryan nodded.
“You disappeared.”
“I was a child.”
“You became a legal ghost.”
Margaret turned to Linda.
“You knew.”
Linda nodded.
“And you let me believe Emily was my only daughter.”
“I had no choice.”
Margaret's voice broke.
“You always had a choice.”
Ryan raised the gun again.
Then the lights came back on.
Police sirens screamed outside.
Ryan looked terrified.
Claire smiled.
“You forgot something.”
Ryan stared.

“Thomas sent the evidence before he died.”
