Chapter 17 - The Name in the Photograph

They emerged nearly two blocks away through an abandoned warehouse.
Claire finally lowered the gun.
Margaret stared at her.
“Show me the photograph.”
Claire hesitated.
Arthur stepped between them.
“She deserves to know.”
Claire slowly handed it over.
Margaret looked down.
The photograph showed Ryan Caldwell.
But he was younger.
Much younger.
Standing beside Charles Caldwell.
And beside them was a woman Margaret recognized immediately.
Linda.
Margaret's hands began shaking.
“No.”
Claire nodded.
“That's why I told you someone in your family was still involved.”
Arthur looked stunned.
“Linda?”
Claire opened the folder.
“Linda wasn't just married to Ryan.”
Margaret looked up.
“What was she doing?”
Claire pointed to a document.
“Managing transfers.”
Margaret's stomach twisted.
“Children?”
“Families.”
Claire turned another page.
“Linda arranged private placements for wealthy clients.”
Arthur whispered, “How long?”
“Years.”
Margaret remembered Linda's constant questions about the house.
About the inheritance.
About Emily.
About the old documents.
Suddenly every conversation sounded different.
Claire reached for another photograph.
“There is something worse.”
Margaret looked at her.
Claire pointed to the back.
“Your name appears on their records.”
Margaret stared.
“What?”
“Not as a victim.”
May you like
Claire's voice dropped.
“As an owner.”
