Chapter 33 - The Grandmother's Secret
Margaret returned to the estate.
She opened her mother's old trunk.
Inside was a diary.
Most pages were blank.
But one page had been torn open.
The remaining words read:
The second child must never return.
Margaret's hands shook.
Her mother had known.
But why?
Arthur found another envelope.
Inside was a photograph of two newborn babies.
The date was 1989.
Margaret stared.
One baby was Emily.
The other was Claire.
But the photograph had been taken before the hospital records claimed Margaret had delivered them.
Arthur looked confused.
“This means…”
Margaret whispered:
“They planned it before I gave birth.”
A letter fell from the envelope.
Margaret opened it.
Dear Margaret,
If you ever discover what happened to your daughters, do not trust the man who tells you he saved them.
Margaret stared at the final line.
Because he was the one who arranged their disappearance.
No name.
Only a set of initials.
M.A.
Arthur looked at her.
“Your mother?”
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”

She looked toward the door.
“My initials.”
