Chapter 30 - Emily's Secret
Emily arrived at the police station before dawn.
She looked exhausted.
Margaret approached her.
“You knew.”
Emily began crying.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From Ryan?”
“Yes.”
“From Linda?”
“Yes.”
“From Claire?”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at Claire.
“I was trying to protect her.”
Claire stared.
“Why?”
Emily reached into her bag.
She removed a small envelope.
“Thomas gave me this.”
Inside was a DNA report.
Margaret's hands shook.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Ryan threatened me.”
“What did he threaten?”
Emily's face went pale.
“He said if I told you about Claire, he'd make sure you lost everything.”
Margaret looked at her daughter.
“You should have trusted me.”
“I was scared.”
Margaret embraced her.
Then Claire noticed the report.
“There is something wrong.”
Margaret looked up.
“What?”
Claire pointed to the date.
“This test was done last month.”
Emily froze.
“I never took a DNA test.”
Silence.
Someone had tested Margaret and Claire.
