Chapter 7 - The Woman in White

Ethan reached Room 417 with two security officers behind him.

The room was empty except for Rachel.

She lay asleep.

A half-empty syringe rested on the floor.

Ethan rushed to the bed.

“Rachel!”

Her eyes opened weakly.

“Ethan?”

“What happened?”

“A nurse.”

“What nurse?”

“White hair.”

Marlene.

Security locked down the floor.

Elevators stopped.

Stairwell doors were monitored.

Every exit camera was checked.

But Marlene had already vanished.

She had entered wearing borrowed scrubs.

The badge used at the door belonged to a nurse who had reported hers missing two weeks earlier.

Two weeks.

Before Rachel collapsed.

This had not been improvised.

Someone had prepared.

Dr. Nolan examined Rachel.

The syringe contained saline.

Nothing dangerous.

That confused everyone until Alvarez noticed something.

Rachel’s chart had been moved.

A page was missing.

“What page?” Ethan asked.

“Her toxicology detail.”

“She came here for a medical record?”

“Looks that way.”

“Why not kill her?”

Alvarez met Ethan’s eyes.

“Maybe she isn’t trying to kill Rachel.”

“Then what is she doing?”

“Controlling what Rachel remembers.”

Security footage showed Marlene entering Room 417.

It also showed her stopping outside for twenty seconds to speak with someone.

A man in a maintenance uniform.

His face was hidden by a cap.

He handed her something.

She handed him the stolen page after leaving Rachel’s room.

The man walked into a service stairwell.

Never appeared on another camera.

Inside that stairwell police found a discarded maintenance shirt and gloves.

No fingerprints.

But one item had fallen from the pocket.

A brass token.

The front showed an engraved bell.

The back showed three numbers.

317.

When Ethan saw it, Rachel screamed.

She had been moved temporarily to another room after the breach.

Ethan showed her the evidence photograph without realizing what it would trigger.

Rachel dropped the cup she was holding.

“Bell room.”

“What?”

“Three seventeen.”

“Rachel, what is it?”

“The elevator.”

“What elevator?”

“The one that didn’t move.”

She pressed both hands to her face.

“It wasn’t an elevator.”

Ethan sat beside her.

“Don’t force yourself.”

“It went down.”

“Where?”

“Under the building.”

“What building?”

“The center.”

The Whitaker Cognitive Development Center had been demolished seventeen years earlier.

A storage complex now stood on the property.

Police obtained plans.

The original clinic showed two floors.

No basement.

But old utility permits showed excavation work.

A sealed underground structure.

Never documented publicly.

Alvarez organized a search.

Ethan demanded to go.

“No.”

“My wife was taken there.”

“You’re not law enforcement.”

“My daughter might be next.”

“That is exactly why you stay with her.”

They argued.

Alvarez won.

At 8:13 p.m., the search team entered the former clinic property.

At 8:47, they found a concealed concrete stairwell beneath an abandoned drainage structure.

At 9:02, Alvarez called Ethan.

“We found the green door.”

Ethan stood in Rachel’s hospital room.

She watched his face.

“What else?”

Alvarez hesitated.

“A room.”

“What’s inside?”

“Chairs.”

Ethan’s stomach turned.

“Children’s chairs?”

“Yes.”

“How many?”

“Twenty-four.”

Rachel shut her eyes.

“Ethan?”

He covered the phone.

“They found it.”

She began trembling.

“Was there a mirror?”

Ethan spoke into the phone.

“Rachel wants to know if there’s a mirror.”

Alvarez looked.

“Yes.”

“One-way glass?”

“Yes.”

Rachel started crying.

“Behind it.”

“What?”

“Tell him to look behind it.”

Ethan relayed the message.

There was movement on the line.

Then silence.

Alvarez returned.

“There’s another room.”

“What’s inside?”

“A desk.”

“Anything else?”

“Files.”

Ethan gripped the phone.

“Rachel’s?”

“Hundreds.”

Rachel looked at him.

May you like

Then Alvarez said something that made Ethan sit down.

“We found a file with Lily’s name.”
