The floorboards concealed a second compartment.
Inside was Thomas's complete journal.
He had documented everything.
The program.
Marlene.
Samuel.
The three Rachels.
And Evelyn.
Rachel read until midnight.
Then she found the sentence that changed everything.
I agreed to become Rachel's guardian because Evelyn begged me.
Rachel stopped.
Evelyn had not abandoned her.
She had asked Thomas to protect her.
But Marlene later took control.
Thomas had spent years trying to undo it.
He had failed.
Rachel cried quietly.
Ethan sat beside her.
“Your father wasn't the person you thought.”
“No.”
She wiped her face.
“He was afraid.”
“Of Marlene?”
Rachel shook her head.
“Of what he had helped create.”
Then Lily entered.
“Mom?”
Rachel looked up.
Lily held another photograph.
“I found this.”
Rachel took it.
It showed Thomas standing beside Rebecca.
