Chapter 8 - The Trial of Ryan Hartwell
The investigation uncovered more than a forged marriage agreement.
Ryan had created false consulting companies, redirected corporate funds, and used employee retirement contributions to cover personal debts. He had also forged board approvals and hidden financial records from auditors.
The recording Chloe provided captured him planning to use the false agreement to seize control of Leah’s company.
His lawyer argued that the document had only been a draft.
The digital records proved otherwise.
Ryan had already scheduled it for submission.
Leah attended every hearing.
She did not wear dramatic clothes or give interviews outside the courthouse. She simply sat behind the prosecutors and listened while the man she had once loved was described through bank transfers, altered contracts, and recorded lies.
During the final hearing, Ryan asked to speak with her.
They met in a courthouse conference room separated by a long wooden table.
“You destroyed my life,” he said.
Leah studied him.
Even then, he could not accept responsibility.
“No. I stopped preventing you from destroying it.”
“I loved you.”
“You loved access.”
Ryan leaned forward.
“You think Chloe is innocent? She knew the company was failing.”
“She knew you were lying. Then she gave me the truth.”
“She betrayed her family.”
Leah stood.
“Sometimes telling the truth is the only way to stop betraying yourself.”
Ryan was convicted of fraud, forgery, theft, unlawful confinement, and assault. The court imposed a prison sentence and ordered the recovery of the stolen company funds.
For the first time in years, Hartwell Global had a chance to survive.
