Chapter 23 - What Ryan Finally Gave Back
Ryan agreed to testify against Sloane.
His attorney called it cooperation.
Leah did not call it redemption.
In court, Ryan described how Sloane taught him to create false consulting companies, manipulate contracts, and replace Leah’s valid marriage agreement with the forged version.
He also admitted that Charles had ordered him to call an ambulance during the final argument.
Ryan had refused for several minutes.
He wanted his father to promise that the fraud would remain hidden.
“I thought he was trying to frighten me,” Ryan said.
“And when he collapsed?” the prosecutor asked.
“I thought he would stand again.”
The courtroom remained silent.
Ryan looked toward Chloe.
“I was wrong.”
Chloe did not look away, but she gave him nothing.
The recovered medical evidence could not prove the delay caused Charles’s death. It proved something else clearly enough.
Ryan had valued his freedom more than his father’s safety.
Sloane was convicted of conspiracy, fraud, witness intimidation, evidence destruction, and financial crimes involving the employee retirement fund.
Martin received a reduced sentence after cooperating.
Mara’s false guarantee was declared invalid.
Her debts disappeared with a judge’s signature.
Outside the courthouse, Ryan asked Leah for one final conversation.
“I gave them everything,” he said.
“You gave them what you could no longer hide.”
“Does that mean nothing?”
“It means you finally told the truth.”
“Will you ever forgive me?”
Leah considered the question.
