Chapter 24 - The Name Above the Factory
Six months later, Vale Hart Industries held its annual employee meeting.
For the first time, the workers’ trust had the largest voting bloc in the company.
Leah proposed removing the final Hartwell reference from the corporate name.
Before the vote, Chloe stood.
“My father believed the company was a promise,” she said. “My brother used our name as permission. My mother used it as an excuse. I used it as a place to hide.”
She looked across the factory floor.
“A company should not belong to the family whose name is above the door. It should belong to the people who keep walking through it.”
The employees voted.
Vale Hart Industries became North Vale Cooperative Industries.
Leah remained chairwoman, but the governing board now included factory employees, engineers, suppliers, and independent ethics officers.
Chloe was promoted to director of employee protection.
Not because she was a Hartwell.
Because the independent board had reviewed every investigation she completed and found that she had earned the position.
Elaine attended the ceremony from the back row.
Afterward, she gave Chloe a folder.
It contained the remaining Hartwell family assets.
Elaine had placed them into a compensation fund for retired employees harmed by Ryan and Sloane.
“I cannot repair what we did,” Elaine said.
“No,” Chloe answered. “But you can stop pretending it cost nothing.”
Elaine nodded.
It was not reconciliation.
It was the beginning of responsibility.
Outside the factory, workers removed the old sign.
No family crest replaced it.
