Chapter 7 - The House Changes Hands
Ryan refused to unlock the door.
Daniel did not ask twice.
Seconds later, the side entrance opened with the estate manager’s emergency key. Daniel entered with two security officers and a local police sergeant.
Ryan immediately changed his tone.
“This is a private family misunderstanding.”
Leah looked at the sergeant.
“My husband struck me, took my phone, locked the door, and attempted to prevent me from leaving.”
Ryan shook his head.
“She is emotional. She destroyed the room.”
The sergeant looked at the overturned table and then at Leah’s cheek.
Chloe raised the memory card.
“I witnessed everything.”
Elaine sat down heavily.
For decades, she had treated the Hartwell name as protection against consequences. Now she watched officers place Ryan’s hands behind his back.
“You cannot arrest me in my own house,” Ryan protested.
Leah met his eyes.
“It isn’t your house.”
Daniel handed her a tablet.
The mortgage default had allowed North Vale Holdings to take possession that morning. Leah had delayed enforcement because she intended to announce a restructuring after the honeymoon.
Now there would be no honeymoon.
Elaine looked at her.
“You would throw us onto the street?”
“No,” Leah said. “I will give you thirty days to leave.”
“This was my husband’s home.”
“And you helped your son turn it into a trap.”
Elaine lowered her gaze.
For the first time, she had no cruel answer prepared.
As Ryan was escorted away, he looked over his shoulder.
“You will regret humiliating me.”

Leah’s expression remained calm.
“No, Ryan. I regret saving you.”
