Chapter 37 - The Last Clean Deed

Claire repeated Ada’s sentence into the mechanical reader.

The machine requested her fingerprint.

Then it asked for the deed number Evelyn had taught her to memorize as a child.

Claire entered it.

The cards began moving through the reader one after another. Each verified claim appeared on Leah’s computer with an original timestamp.

Forty-three properties.

Forty-three ownership histories.

Forty-three families whose evidence Gabriel intended to erase.

Leah submitted the complete index to the state court at 11:57.

The transfer countdown continued.

Two minutes.

The clerk confirmed receipt but warned that a judge still had to sign the suspension order.

Judge Sloan was no longer authorized.

The emergency judge had not reviewed the evidence.

One minute.

Nora returned to the conference-room terminal at Marrowgate headquarters. The screen requested her biometric consent.

Gabriel had designed the system so only she could complete the transfer.

But the same access could also suspend it.

Benjamin warned that entering her identity might give Gabriel a permanent connection to her authority.

Nora placed her hand on the scanner anyway.

The terminal displayed two choices.

CONFIRM SUCCESSION.

REJECT SUCCESSION.

She selected reject.

The screen demanded a reason.

Nora typed:

THE TRUST BELONGS TO THE VICTIMS, NOT THE GUARDIANS.

Ten seconds remained.

The system froze at three.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then every red property marker disappeared from the map.

The court issued its suspension order thirty seconds later.

Outside Hale House and Evelyn House, officers removed the seizure notices.

The houses remained open.

Harris received confirmation that Gabriel had been found near the river terminal. He had attempted to leave Westbridge using one of Voss’s old identities.

He was taken into custody without resistance.

Ruth recovered the original authorization seal from his coat.

Elise was found inside a nearby records warehouse.

She returned to Hale House shortly before midnight.

Nora believed the immediate danger had ended.

Then Leah entered the dining room carrying a document recovered from Gabriel’s vehicle.

It was a national property map.

Westbridge was only one marked city.

Twelve others had been circled.

Beside the largest circle, Gabriel had written:
