Chapter 32 - The Message Hidden in Her Silence
Detective Harris dispatched officers to the municipal archive.
Nora refused to remain at the courthouse.
She, Leah, Claire, Benjamin and Celeste followed Harris across town. They arrived at 2:14, one minute before the building’s automatic locks activated.
The archivist on duty had vanished.
A chair blocked the rear exit, and several surveillance cameras had been turned toward the walls.
They found the room from Elise’s video on the second floor.
It was empty.
Her written confession remained on the table beside a cup of warm coffee. The paper contained several accusations, but the first letter of every paragraph formed a hidden sentence.
MARTIN IS ALIVE.
Celeste recognized the name.
Martin Rowan had been Ada’s estate attorney and one of the original guardians. He was also the unidentified man in the photograph from Ada’s final week.
Official records stated that Martin died shortly after Ada.
Benjamin examined the archive shelves.
“He knew more about the trust than any of us.”
“Except Gabriel,” Celeste said.
On the wall, Elise had drawn a small key and written the number six beneath it.
Benjamin explained that the sixth key was not a physical key. It was an emergency revocation authority given to one original guardian.
If Martin remained alive, he could cancel Gabriel’s control without needing the missing records.
Leah searched the archive database for Martin Rowan.
His death certificate had been filed by Judge Sloan.
The physician who signed it had later lost his license for falsifying medical records.
Claire found a recent request slip on the desk.
Someone named Michael Rowan had accessed Ada Hale’s estate file the previous afternoon. The address attached to the request belonged to a church outside Westbridge.
Nora’s phone rang from a blocked number.
A man spoke before she could answer.
“My name is Martin Rowan. You are searching in the wrong direction.”
“Where is Elise?”
“Alive, unless Gabriel discovers what she took.”
“What did she take?”
“The only document proving he was removed from the trust.”
Nora looked at Benjamin.
Martin continued.
“Gabriel did not steal Ada’s records from the vault.”
“Then who did?”
A long silence followed.
“Benjamin.”
Nora turned on the speaker.
Martin’s next words filled the archive room.
“Search his bag. Ask him why the file with your name was the only one he refused to surrender.”
Benjamin stepped backward.
His hand moved toward the leather bag resting beside his chair.
Celeste reached it first.
Inside was a sealed file.
