Chapter 26 - The Voice on the Dead Line
The telephone continued ringing inside the abandoned ticket office.
Nora reached for the receiver, but Benjamin caught her wrist.
“Do not answer it.”
His fear disturbed her more than the name glowing on the display.
ADA HALE.
“My grandmother has been dead for eleven years,” Nora said. “Why are you afraid of her?”
Benjamin released her without answering.
Detective Harris tested the station doors. They would not move. The electronic locks had activated even though the building had supposedly been disconnected from power for fifteen years.
The telephone rang again.
Nora picked it up.
For several seconds, there was only static. Then Ada’s voice filled the receiver.
“Nora, if you are hearing this message, someone has opened the vault from the inside.”
The message was a recording, but something about its timing felt almost alive.
Ada continued.
“The man who opened it will claim he has returned for his family. He has not. He has returned for the final authority hidden inside the trust.”
Benjamin stepped closer.
“What authority?”
The recording paused, as though waiting for the question.
“The authority to erase every disputed deed in Westbridge.”
Nora tightened her grip on the receiver.
A complete erasure would not only destroy fraudulent deeds. It would also destroy the records proving who the original owners had been.
Every victim could lose the evidence needed to reclaim a home.
Ada’s voice became quieter.
“There were never five original guardians. There were six.”
Nora looked at the photograph Celeste had left behind.
Ada. Ruth. Celeste. Judge Sloan. The unidentified man.
And the face that had been cut away.
“The sixth guardian betrayed the others,” Ada said. “I removed his name, but Benjamin refused to let me destroy him.”
Benjamin’s expression changed.
The locks on the station doors released with a heavy metallic sound.
Before the recording ended, Ada delivered one final warning.
“Do not ask Benjamin whether his brother is alive.”
Nora faced him.
“Why not?”
The lights inside the station suddenly came on.
Dozens of old photographs covered the wall behind Benjamin.
Every photograph showed two young men standing beside Ada Hale.
One was Benjamin.
The other was the man who had walked out of the vault.
