Chapter 33 - The File Benjamin Stole
Benjamin did not attempt to take the file back.
“I was going to tell you.”
Nora broke the seal.
The first page was her birth record. Celeste was listed as her mother. The space for the father’s name had originally been left blank.
Ada had later attached the result of a private paternity test.
Probability of paternity: 99.98 percent.
The tested man was Gabriel Hale.
Nora read the name twice, but the letters did not become less real.
Gabriel was not merely the guardian trying to seize the trust.
He was her father.
Celeste sat down.
“I never wanted you to learn this from a document.”
“You had twenty-four years to tell me.”
“I was afraid he would use you.”
“He already is.”
Benjamin explained that Ada had hidden Nora’s paternity because Gabriel’s direct descendant carried a special succession right. If the original guardian system collapsed, the trust would search for the nearest living heir connected to both Ada’s family and its original architect.
That heir was Nora.
Gabriel could not fully control the trust without her biometric consent.
“But the application used my voice and bloodline verification,” Nora said.
“It copied them,” Leah replied. “Temporary control can be forged. Permanent control requires you in person.”
Celeste said Gabriel would not harm Nora because he needed her alive.
Nora closed the file.
“That does not make him less dangerous.”
Martin called again and provided instructions to meet him at an abandoned church. Harris insisted on sending officers first.
They found Martin in a small records room beneath the sanctuary.
He was older than the man in Ada’s photograph, but Nora recognized his eyes.
Martin carried the original revocation document.
Elise had delivered it to him before Gabriel captured her.
The document confirmed that Gabriel had been removed for building an unauthorized backdoor into the trust. Martin could activate the revocation, but only with the consent of three current house custodians.
Nora represented Hale House.
Claire represented Evelyn House.
The third custodian was Ruth Calder.
Without Ruth, the document was incomplete.
Martin placed a second paper on the table.
It was a copy of the emergency order against Hale House.
“The eviction becomes permanent at sunset,” he said.
Nora checked the time.
They had less than two hours.
A message appeared on her phone.
It contained a photograph of Ruth seated inside the old Marrowgate Property Services headquarters.
Gabriel stood behind her.
